MISSION VIEJO : Mayor Wants to Make City Internet-Friendly

When City Councilwoman Sherri Butterfield takes over Monday as mayor, one of her first priorities will be computer access to City Hall.
“One of the things that is really important to me is public access to government,” said Butterfield, a freelance writer who will serve a one-year term as mayor. “I want to get the city into the World Wide Web.”
She wants to set up a system that will allow residents with questions or complaints to reach officials by e-mail. The system also would make city codes, council agendas and demographic data available through the Internet.
Mission Viejo already has a Web listing with basic economic information for businesses considering moving to the city.
“I want to expand that greatly,” Butterfield said, “for people who want to move into the city or even just kids doing reports for school.”
Besides giving constituents computer access to City Hall, Butterfield said, she also will focus on resolving some lingering issues related to Orange County’s bankruptcy and on moving ahead with plans for the new library, to be completed in 1997.
Being mayor “does give you an opportunity to have your ideas listened to,” she said.
