ORANGE COUNTY ALMANAC : Carpool Controversy

Share

In January 1986, a group of Costa Mesa Freeway commuters launched a campaign against the freeway’s new carpool lanes, saying they were dangerous.

But county officials said there had been fewer traffic accidents since the lanes opened, and the average one-way commuting time of motorists using the lanes had been reduced from 35 minutes to just 11.
