2 Killed When Pickup Overturns on Freeway

Two people were killed early New Year’s Day when the driver of a pickup truck hit a metal guardrail on the Antelope Valley Freeway near Agua Dulce, authorities said.

Officers believe that Peter Correa, 21, of San Fernando was drunk and driving south on the freeway near Agua Dulce Canyon Road when he lost control of his truck, Officer Shirley Gaines of the California Highway Patrol said.

His passengers--a 19-year-old Northridge man and 20-year-old Arleta woman--were killed when the truck overturned, causing the roof to cave in, Gaines said. The names of the victims were held pending notification of their next of kin.

Correa, who suffered moderate injuries, was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, she said. Upon his release from the hospital, Gaines said, he will be booked on suspicion of drunk driving and suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.
