Value of Stocks on NYSE Reaches $6 Trillion: The value of all the securities traded on the New York Stock Exchange reached $6 trillion at the end of 1995, the exchange said, or about 20.3% more than the total amount of U.S. government debt outstanding. Last May, when the value of New York Exchange stocks reached $5 trillion for the first time, NYSE stocks were worth 3% more than the government’s debt. According to the Treasury, the amount of government debt as of Thursday stood at $4.989 trillion. About 2,675 companies’ shares trade on the NYSE, up from 2,586 last May. The NYSE market capitalization surpassed $4 trillion in December 1992, when shares of 2,088 companies were listed on the Big Board, the world’s largest stock market.
