Sheriff’s Captain Is Struck by Car While Aiding Motorist
A Los Angeles County sheriff’s captain was struck by a car and seriously injured early Thursday as he came to the aid of a motorist stranded on the Chino Hills Parkway in Pomona, authorities said.
Capt. Robert Mirabella, 52, was driving north on the parkway when he stopped to assist a motorist whose car had caught fire, Deputy Mark Bailey said.
“He was walking toward the motorist’s vehicle to assist him when another car hit him and his vehicle,” Bailey said.
Mirabella, a 26-year department veteran assigned to the sheriff’s Contract Law Enforcement Bureau, was in serious condition Thursday at Pomona Valley Medical Center.
The motorist who was driving the vehicle that struck Mirabella was questioned but was not arrested, authorities said.
