Gretzky Is Voted All-Star Starter Again

Defenseman Paul Coffey of the Detroit Red Wings rolled up a record vote among the six starters picked for the NHL’s Western Conference All-Star team, announced Thursday.

Coffey’s vote total of 620,788 beat the previous record of 432,879 set in 1991 by St. Louis Blues winger Brett Hull.

Wayne Gretzky of the Kings earned his 15th berth for the Jan. 20 game, played in Boston, and the Chicago Blackhawks will send goalie Ed Belfour and defenseman Chris Chelios. Hull and Pavel Bure of the Vancouver Canucks earned the other starting spots, although Bure is injured and cannot play.

Alexander Semak scored with 2:29 left in regulation, lifting the New York Islanders to a 2-2 tie with the Montreal Canadiens at New York. . . . Brett Hull had a goal and an assist as St. Louis defeated Chicago, 3-1, at Chicago. . . . Kjell Samuelsson scored his first goal of the season with 4:03 left in the third period as Philadelphia tied Colorado, 2-2, at Denver.

NHL Notes

Defenseman Rob Zettler of the Toronto Maple Leafs drew a two-game suspension and a $1,000 fine for checking Joe Nieuwendyk of the Dallas Stars from behind in a game on Monday.
