Council Gives Initial OK for Golf Course

Construction of an 18-hole golf course has been given preliminary approval in the Pacific Coast Homes Development project in La Habra hills.

Developers said the 6,555-yard, par-72 golf course will be completed in mid- or late-1997. It will include a clubhouse and will be located between Beach Boulevard and Idaho Street, south of Imperial Highway.

The Pacific Coast Homes project also includes a fire station and 546 upscale, Spanish-style houses. City officials said 159 of the homes already have been built, and construction of the fire station and remaining 387 homes is expected to begin soon.

The cost to play on the golf course will be about $75 per round, officials said. It is expected to open as a public course and eventually become private.

City Council members this week unanimously gave preliminary approval for the golf course, calling it “a fine project.”

“As a person who loves the game of golf, I’m looking forward to it,” said Councilman James Flora.

Added Councilman David M. Cheverton: “This is the crown jewel of the project up there. I think it’s going to bring revenue to town and people who wouldn’t otherwise come to town.”

A final decision on the golf course is expected at a council meeting Jan. 18.
