Your article (Dec. 25) on the Harvard-Westlake School’s new $13-million science center suggests some interesting but continually overlooked points about public education: Consider how much money those who have the resources feel is necessary to ensure that their children will receive a good education. Consider what your local public school might accomplish given Harvard-Westlake’s resources ($12,000 per year per child and a $15-million endowment).

Consider how far we are from providing the resources necessary to provide all children, particularly those who live in great poverty, with the quality of education offered at Harvard-Westlake.

Perhaps the public schools are not doing such a bad job after all, considering the resources provided.
