2 Software Firms Settle Piracy Case: Microsoft Corp. and Novell Inc. said they reached the settlement with a computer hacker who ran a software piracy operation. Scott Morris, who ran Assassins’ Guild Bulletin Board Service, agreed to pay $70,300 and forfeit $40,000 worth of computer equipment in the settlement, the companies said. Morris also agreed to help Microsoft and Novell, the No. 1 and No. 2 personal computer software companies, in other piracy investigations. He could not immediately be reached for comment. Assassins’ Guild was allegedly the headquarters for two groups of hackers who distributed illegal copies of commercial software through electronic bulletin board services.
