Last year’s big storms began replenishing an underground water bank in Kern County after nearly a decade of drought.

One million acre-feet of water was channeled to the underground basin during 1995 by the Kern County Water Agency, the city of Bakersfield and 17 Kern County irrigation districts. The total far exceeded the amount saved in previous good water years of 1983 and 1986.

“By far, this is the largest banking year we’ve ever had,” said Rick Iger, Kern County Water Bank manager.

He added that 800,000 acre-feet of water was saved underground in 1983 and 740,000 in 1986.
