Ex-Dodger Sax Quits Assembly Race
Former major league baseball player Steve Sax, who had hoped to begin a new career in the Legislature, has announced he is dropping out of the race for the 4th Assembly District here.
“I truly believe it is in the best interest of my two young children,” Sax said in a statement distributed by his campaign Friday.
“He’s been ahead in the polling name [identification] and he has done pretty well raising money, but the main thing is that he just wanted more time with the family,” said campaign spokesman Rick Davis.
Sax, 36, a Republican and resident of suburban Loomis east of Sacramento, entered the race to succeed GOP Assemblyman David Knowles, who is required to leave the Assembly this year because of term limits. Sax announced his intention to run in April.
Sax, a second baseman, was the National League rookie of the year in 1982 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He played in the 1981 and 1988 World Series, and spent most of his career with the Dodgers.
