Valleywide : ‘Aftershock Kit’ Takes Aim at Scams

Share

After numerous San Fernando Valley residents were swindled by contractors in the aftermath of the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the Contractors State License Board has released an “Aftershock Kit” it says will help to prevent future scams.

The free kit gives details on how to find and check out a reputable contractor and negotiate a contract. It also contains a basic checklist to run down before hiring one.

“For some unfortunate Californians who have been the victims of an earthquake, hiring an unlicensed contractor can cause additional damage, much like an aftershock,” contractors board registrar Gail Jesswein said.

The contractors board, which was established in 1929, regulates and licenses more than 278,000 contractors. To qualify for a license, a contractor must have at least four years’ journey-level experience and pass an exam in trade and license law.

In addition to the new kit, the Contractors State License Board will keep its Earthquake Response Center in Van Nuys open until June to handle continuing complaints from residents about contracting woes. The office is at 6150 Van Nuys Blvd., Suite 230, Van Nuys, and the phone number is (818) 908-4592.
