WHO’S FIRST

I hope I’m not the only one who did a double-take at the photo of Oasis singer Liam Gallagher to make sure it wasn’t an early ‘60s mod shot of the Who’s lead singer, Roger Daltrey (Pop Eye, Jan. 7). The resemblance is uncanny, yet Oasis, Blur and other ‘90s British bands are constantly compared to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, leaving the Who either in third place or just plain unmentioned.

I am not disputing the fact that the Fab Four led the British invasion, but I do question why the Who never receives equal recognition and respect. They were innovators (does anyone remember “Tommy”?), incomparable live, and their music could range just as easily from raw emotion to the sublime.

Whether Gallagher is deliberately trying to model his “look” after Daltrey remains unclear, but I can only hope he is indeed somehow paying homage to “the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world.”
