Dr. Ellis Ring, 82, dentist-turned-developer who pioneered the concept of garden apartments. After 17 years as a practicing dentist in Rochester, N.Y., he traveled to California to recuperate after falling on a patch of ice. He later moved to Los Angeles and taught dentistry at UCLA and USC. In 1958 he and his brother, Selden, formed Ring Bros. Corp., a real estate development company. Their garden apartments emphasized lush landscaping and recreational facilities, typified by one of his favorite projects, Mariners Village in Marina del Rey.
