Council OKs Design for Las Palmas Bridge
Designs for a new bridge on West Las Palmas Drive in north Fullerton won City Council approval last week.
The existing bridge was built in the 1930s. Its replacement will be 5 feet longer and 15 feet wider.
The old bridge has been rated structurally deficient by Caltrans, said Robert Hodson, director of engineering.
“It is safe, but there could be a problem in an earthquake,” he said.
The bridge is also too narrow for cars and pedestrians to share and does not meet state standards, Hodson said.
The new bridge will be wide enough for two lanes of traffic, two 5-foot-wide sidewalks and a horse trail.
The cost to replace the bridge is estimated at $755,000. Federal funds will cover 70% of the project.
