UCLA’s first football game of the post-Terry Donahue era, against Tennessee at Knoxville, Tenn., on Sept. 7, will be televised by CBS.

CBS, getting back into regular-season college football after a five-year absence, announced its 1996 schedule on Monday.

Although no talent assignments were made, CBS’ new team of Jim Nantz and Donahue is expected to work the UCLA-Tennessee national telecast, from 5-8 p.m. PDT, provided Donahue does not take a coaching job between now and then.

Donahue was in Oklahoma City on Monday and could not be reached. He was there with Jonathan Ogden, who was presented the Outland Trophy at a dinner Monday night.

CBS will televise selected home games of Southeastern Conference and Big East Conference teams, plus two Notre Dame road games and Army-Navy on Dec. 7. CBS’ second telecast will be Florida at Tennessee on Sept. 21.

This year will mark the third season in succession that UCLA has had its opener on network television in prime time in the East. ABC showed the Bruins’ last two openers against Tennessee and Miami.
