Santa Monica police arrested two men Monday after a car-to-car shooting last weekend that left one man dead and another in critical condition, police said.

Caesar Martin, 19, of Culver City was driving with companions shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday when he was fatally shot in the back by a gunman in a passing car, said Sgt. Gary Gallinot.

Fellow passenger Eric Huizar, 20, of Inglewood remains in critical condition with several bullet wounds to his upper body.

On Monday, police arrested Miguel Zapata and Tony Sanchez, both 22 and of West Los Angeles, and booked them on suspicion of murder, Gallinot said.

The confrontation arose when Zapata and Sanchez allegedly exchanged words with Martin at a party in Venice. The pair followed Martin and his friends from the party, pursued them and began shooting at them out the car window, police said.

The car in which the victims were riding crashed into a drainage ditch in the 1700 block of Dewey Street in Santa Monica, Gallinot said. Friends transported the injured pair to the hospital.
