Countywide : Facts of Breast Cancer Focus of Public Fairs

Share

The importance of early detection in fighting breast cancer is the message that experts hope to convey to scores of women Saturday and Feb. 3 during Breast Health Awareness Days, two free public fairs.

In the past, most information about cancer has been directed to women 50 or older, organizers said. But the new emphasis is on reaching those 30 to 45, with the goal being to emphasize that proper eating and exercise habits can prevent many cancers.

Medical experts also will discuss family risk factors.

“With more than 10% of all cancers inherited, we want people, especially young women, to know what steps they can take toward detecting cancer early or preventing it altogether,” said Robert T. Eagan, oncologist and medical director of the regional cancer center at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange.

“Early detection is particularly important for people who are at risk . . . due to their hereditary or genetic makeup or because of lifestyle,” Eagan said.

The health fairs are being sponsored by the hospital and Nordstrom Department Stores.

Saturday’s events will begin at 8 a.m. at Nordstrom in Costa Mesa’s South Coast Plaza. Included will be a fashion presentation and panel discussion by Orange County fashion writers, breast self-examination classes, free screenings and a diet and exercise workshop.

Radiologist Linda Sutherland will discuss the importance of mammograms and the implications of new technology and research. Brian D. Kent and Ivan M. Turpin, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, will have sessions for women with breast implants and those considering them.

The Feb. 3 program, which will follow the same format, will be at Nordstrom at MainPlace/Santa Ana.
