New Law Would Tame Some Party Animals

Hearty partying could mean a hefty penalty.

The City Council has tentatively approved an ordinance that calls for a $500 fine on party hosts if police visit more than once.

Councilman Barry L. Denes pushed for the new ordinance, favored by four out of the five council members. Councilman John Frackelton objected because the measure was “overkill.”

Denes said that last fall a party in his neighborhood got alarmingly out of control. “There was speeding of cars and public urination,” Denes said. “It was a nightmare.”

The ordinance is scheduled for final adoption Feb. 27. It would become law 30 days after that.

Police would issue a written warning to a party host on the first visit. If the party is visited a second time, police could cite the owner for $500 or more.
