OXNARD : After-School Group Will Celebrate Success

Share

When an after-school activities program started last year at Oxnard’s Lemonwood and Driffill elementary schools, organizers expected less than 300 children to show up.

But more than 400 students signed up for the programs, where they can do homework, participate in athletics and make crafts.

To celebrate the success, the Oxnard Boys & Girls Club and local officials will host an anniversary celebration at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The festivities--including student skits and speeches by Supervisor John Flynn and Oxnard officials--will take place at Lemonwood Elementary School, 2200 Carnegie Court in Oxnard.

“The program has been successful beyond anyone’s imagination,” said Rosann Gallien, senior administrative assistant to Flynn, whose district includes parts of Oxnard. “It is such a boon for the parents. They can work later. And the kids are in a safe environment.”

Run by the Oxnard Boys & Girls Club, the after-school program got off the ground when Flynn’s office raised about $32,000 last year. Gallien said Oxnard has since provided about $100,000 for the program, which is free for the students.
