Southeast : 2,000 Truckers Protest Conditions at Port
About 2,000 truckers rolled their rigs past Long Beach City Hall Tuesday afternoon to protest working conditions at the Port of Long Beach.
For two hours, truck horns drowned out conversation along Ocean Boulevard, where demonstrators gathered to pressure the City Council into adopting a resolution supporting the drivers.
The truckers are asking for help in setting up a dispatch system that could cut the time they spend waiting to pick up loads from the port. They also want stricter enforcement of safety rules.
Port officials denied responsibility for the truckers’ working conditions, an assertion echoed Tuesday by a shippers’ association as well as representatives for area trucking companies.
