A 39-year-old man was killed when a car swerving wildly along Lankershim Boulevard caromed off a fire hydrant into the car the man was in, Los Angeles police said.

The victim, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, was a passenger in a car heading south in the 8100 block of Lankershim about 6 p.m., LAPD Officer Bill Mulvihill said. A car in the northbound lane, driven by an unidentified woman, swerved into the fire hydrant, then skidded across the road hitting the other car.

The 17-year-old driver and a 4-year-old passenger in the first car were taken to Los Angeles Childrens Hospital with minor injuries, Mulvihill said. The driver of the second car was taken to North Hollywood Medical Center with unknown injuries.
