High school students will take the place of attorneys, witnesses, even bailiffs Monday evening as the 13th annual Ventura County Mock Trial Competition opens at the Ventura County Hall of Justice.

Students from 12 high schools in the area will compete for a slot in the State Mock Trial Competition in Sacramento next month.

The students will act the parts of lawyers, clerks and witnesses as they argue the case People vs. Caufield, which deals with carjacking, due process and the “three strikes” law.

Officials are expecting more than 300 students to take part in the competition. Sixteen judges and 75 attorneys will act as scorekeepers.

Two two-hour rounds are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. The top four teams will return Thursday night for two final rounds to determine the winner, who will represent Ventura County in Sacramento.
