Affirmative Action
The Los Angeles City Council on Jan. 13 unanimously renewed its support for long-term city affirmative action policies and condemned a proposed initiative that would dismantle such policies.
Invoking the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy in defending the right of equal opportunity and diversity, council members and scores of religious leaders from across the city made it clear that the issue is not political but moral.
This reaffirmation of solidarity for the principles of affirmative action attracted huge media coverage, not only on television and radio, but a front-page story and photo in the Daily News.
Significantly silent was The Times. If one sovereign test of a great newspaper is to report news that has a moral impact on the lives of all segments of the body politic, The Times failed to deliver and owes readers an explanation.
