Child Support Law Reforms Needed

Share

* I applaud Assemblyman Bill Morrow for his courage in introducing Assembly Bill 180 as a true reform of California’s child support law. As a single father of a wonderful 10-year-old, I acknowledge my obligation to support him. However, during a recent court custody dispute in Ventura County Superior Court, I was assessed an increase in my support payments.

If there was an existing law basing support payments on current income of both parents, then I was unfairly treated--especially since I retain 42% of custody time and am the primary custodian for nine weeks in the summer. The judge absolutely refused to take this fact into consideration.

This fine piece of legislation is long overdue. Fathers and mothers who pay child support must now unite behind this bill. We have only strength in numbers.

My advice to mothers who think that men owe them a living is this: Get an education, and then get a job.
