City’s Bus Service Gets New Name
The new name for the city’s bus service is San Fernando Mission Transit.
The city held a contest and reviewed more than 60 submissions from the public to rename the old dial-a-ride service.
But the winning submission--Mission City Transit--was too similar to the name of another city’s bus service, officials said. So at a City Council meeting held Monday, the council came up with its own name.
“I don’t care what it is, but I would like to see the word ‘San Fernando’ in it somewhere,” said Councilman Doude Wysbeek, who joked that his top choice for a new name would be: “The Flying Dutchman.” Wysbeek is Dutch.
The council announced the name-change contest upon the retirement of two aging dial-a-ride buses and the purchase of two new coaches. Riders can call the service to schedule a trip to the grocery store or the doctor. The cost is 75 cents one-way, 50 cents for seniors.
The person who submitted the winning name has not yet been announced by the city, but will receive a free, one-year bus pass for the service and dinner for two at a local restaurant.
