Firm Gets Ambulance Program Contract
A San Diego employment firm has been awarded a $161,388 contract to help the city’s Fire Department establish an in-house ambulance program.
Under the agreement, Employment Systems Inc. will hire 12 ambulance drivers who also are paramedics to work for the city for a year.
Two of the employees will be on duty at all times, City Manager Jerry Bankston said.
Bankston said the move will save money for the city, which must operate its own ambulances to be able to bill and get paid for medical supplies that its paramedics use when transporting people to local hospitals.
In the past, city paramedics could use medical supplies and then seek reimbursement from the hospitals.
But because of a change in legislation, cities can no longer be reimbursed unless they operate their own ambulances.
