. . . Wells Fargo & Co. announced plans to acquire British-owned Crocker National Corp. for $1.08 billion, joining California’s two oldest banks in the largest merger in U.S. banking history. Wells Fargo officials instituted a hiring freeze and told Orange County employees to expect job cuts and branch closings.
