South Bay : LIBRARY BASH

Share

During the county fiscal crisis, it was slated for closure and at one time it was open only two days a week. Still, the Wiseburn Library in Hawthorne prevailed, and on Saturday residents will honor the hall of literacy with a 30-year birthday bash.

Sandwiched between an elementary school and junior high school, the Wiseburn Library, a branch of the county library system, has always been the center of the community. There are 5,335 registered borrowers who browse the library’s collection of nearly 36,000 books and 153 periodicals. Each week, dozens of families show up for the storytime and crafts program.

In honor of the library’s birthday, storytime patrons will dress in costumes depicting their favorite character and read a story they have written about what they like best about the library.

“This community is proud of the library,” said program coordinator Jean McDowell.

Festivities begin at 3 p.m. at the library at 5335 W. 135th St.
