Those Hung Up on 1 Will Miss the Party

Share

In the latest volley of the millinery boundary war (“Illogical Thinking, a No. 1 Complaint,” Feb. 4), we have the “1-ian” Richard J. Warren arguing against the “0-crats” with the claim that “almost everything we organize numerically begins with ‘1’ rather than ‘0’ ”. He cites as evidence the numbering conventions on checks, magazines and newspapers. Perhaps he should also have included 3,001-mile oil changes, 11-year high school reunions, 51st wedding anniversaries and that dreaded 41st birthday.

As for the alleged illogicality of people preferring 2000 over 2001: Given the option, no one in their right mind would choose to put off the party of the century by an entire year.
