Government Internet Curbs

Share

* Re “Asia Wary of Being Wired,” Feb. 3: I was dismayed by the timing of your critique of Asian nations that are trying to curb the free flow of ideas on the Internet. Ironically, one does not have to look that far to see a government trying to do just that. This article came out two days after Congress approved a telecommunications bill that would control the free flow of ideas on the Internet right here, right now.

Your article says that Asian countries “make no bones about rejecting its (the Internet’s) American-flavored ideology of free markets and open access to information.” That seems to be the wrong choice of words. The American-flavored ideology of the moment is one of oppression and control and not one of open access to information.

* Why does the new telecommunications bill bother to ban the transmission of indecent material over computer networks “unless controls are in place to keep it out of the hands of children”? These controls are already in place. They’re called “parents.”
