Activist Named to Colorado River Board

A Calabasas community activist who helped lead his city’s efforts to incorporate has been appointed by Gov. Pete Wilson to the Colorado River Board of California.

Norman L. Buehring, 53, is assistant chief engineer for water with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, where he has worked since 1965.

The 10-member board advocates on the state’s behalf in matters relating to control, development and utilization of water and power from the Colorado River. Buehring will serve as an alternate for Jim Wickser, assistant general manager for water for DWP.

Buehring said last week he would take an active role on the board, attending meetings regularly with Wickser and representing him in his absence.

“The Colorado River is an extremely important water supply,” Buehring said. “The objective of our agency is to make sure that we have a reliable water supply for Los Angeles.”

A California native and longtime resident of the Saratoga Hills area of Calabasas, Buehring led the successful campaign to include his neighborhood in the area that incorporated as the city of Calabasas in 1991.

Buehring, a Republican, has remained active in local issues and currently serves as a chairman on the Calabasas Traffic and Transportation Commission. He and his wife have three adult children.

He holds master’s degrees in hydraulic engineering and public administration from USC and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Cal State Long Beach.
