ATLANTA ON HER MIND: Darcy Arreola of Valencia will begin her quest to make the U.S. Olympic team when she runs in the women’s mile at the L.A. Invitational indoor track and field meet Feb. 24 at the Sports Arena. It’s the only indoor meet during the L.A. winter season. . . . As a Cal State Northridge senior, Arreola won the 1,500 meters in the 1991 NCAA championships and represented the United States in that summer’s World Championships in Tokyo.

FALCON FLASH: Big things will be expected of Palmdale High sophomore Kadrina Coffee this season. . . . Coffee, who will run in the 500-yard dash and on the Falcons’ 4 x 160-yard and 8 x 160-yard relay teams at the Sports Arena, moved to fourth on the all-time list for the region in the 400 meters with a time of 53.96 seconds last year.

RELAXED: Kim Mortensen of Thousand Oaks High won the Foot Locker national cross-country championships in December, but she hasn’t let that alter her approach to track. “I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself by shooting for specific times,” said Mortensen, above, who will run in the girls’ mile and two-mile relays in the L.A. Invitational. . . . “I just want to go out and have fun, like I did in cross-country.”

DOUBLE TROUBLE: Ronney Jenkins of Hueneme High capped his senior football season by rushing for a national record of 619 yards against Rio Mesa last fall, but he’s also a standout long jumper with a best of 24 feet, 1 inch. . . . The Brigham Young-bound Jenkins will compete in the 50-meter dash, the long jump and the 4 x 160-yard relay at the Sports Arena.

MULTITALENTED: Liz Giltner of Chaminade High placed sixth in the girls’ high jump in the 1994 and ’95 State championships, but her greatest accomplishments have come in the seven-event heptathlon. . . . Giltner, a junior, will compete in the high jump at the L.A. Invitational. She posted the second-highest high school heptathlon score (4,799 points) in the nation last year.
