Street Lights to Be Upgraded Near Pier

A section of the Balboa Peninsula’s Ocean Front sidewalk will soon see the brighter side--a city project will upgrade street lights on a seven-block stretch near Balboa Pier.

The lighting systems from Sixth Street to Palm Street and the Balboa Pier parking lot will be replaced within two to three weeks, Public Works Director Don Webb said. Completion of the $290,000 project is expected by early April.

“We had several complaints during the Christmas Lights Boat Parade because it was too dark in the area,” Webb said.

Portions of the electrical system along the beachfront sidewalk were installed in 1931 and the frequency of outages has increased over the last year. On Dec. 18, a short circuit put the lights out for nearly four days, Webb said. Temporary lighting was rigged for the pier parking lot at that time. The system had a short again last month, causing a two-day blackout.

Under a 15-year replacement program begun last year, obsolete street lighting systems are being converted throughout the city.
