A man who may have had a grudge against his former bosses shot up a Packard Bell plant Monday with 50 to 60 rounds of ammunition before he was wounded by a security guard, police said.

No other injuries were reported in the incident at the cavernous assembly area of the computer maker’s headquarters.

“It’s really miraculous that somebody wasn’t hit with at least a ricochet,” police spokesman Michael Heenan said.

Heenan identified the gunman as Phuoc Bui, 34. Bui was treated at a hospital and booked on attempted murder and kidnapping charges.

The kidnapping charge was added because Bui grabbed a female employee and forced her through a turnstile to get into the building, Heenan said.

Bui was fired Friday. Heenan said late Monday that Bui had given some co-workers a newspaper article that discussed “the wisdom of having a plan to protect workers against violence.”

Bui entered the Packard Bell complex about 9 a.m. Monday and went to his former work site, a large packing room, carrying a 9-millimeter semiautomatic pistol and more than 100 rounds of ammunition in a small nylon bag, said Heenan.

The gunman began shooting, mostly into the ceiling and into an office where nine supervisors were meeting, Heenan said.
