Mobil Corp. in Aggressive Bid for Australia’s Ampolex: Analysts said they expect the unsolicited $923.8-million takeover bid for the oil and gas group to meet with easy success. Brokers described the cash offer of about $3.17 a share as generous, and some said it looks unjustified when measured against the Sydney-based Ampolex Ltd.’s assets. Analysts said the bid could be aimed at giving Mobil greater exposure to liquefied natural gas through Ampolex’s share of the huge undeveloped Gorgon natural gas field off west Australia, which is expected to begin development in late 1997. Ampolex issued a statement saying its board will meet soon to discuss the offer and that it was advising shareholders they need not take any action on the bid.
