Calabasas : Council to Discuss Proposed Sign Law

Share

A controversial proposed ordinance prohibiting pole signs will be discussed tonight by the Calabasas Planning Commission.

When Calabasas incorporated in 1991, it adopted Los Angeles County’s sign ordinance, which prohibited pole signs higher than 42 feet. The proposed new ordinance, which would be part of the city’s first development code, would ban signs higher than 10 feet.

The issue is politically touchy because many Calabasas businesses have signs that would be outlawed under the proposal. The firms say they need the signs to attract customers from the freeway, and that business would fall off without them.

Opponents of pole signs say they are an eyesore that spoil the region’s natural beauty, and they question whether the establishments would suffer economically if the signs came down.

Steve Harris, Calabasas’ community development director, said numerous workshops and public hearings will be held before the proposed development code comes to a vote of the City Council, probably this summer.

“This is our first cut at this, and I’m sure there will be some changes,” he said.

The Planning Commission will meet at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 26135 Mureau Road.
