Westside : TAXI STOPS

Share

Work was made easier for cabdrivers in Santa Monica on Tuesday after a vote by the City Council approving eight new taxi zones where cabs can stop and pick up passengers.

The council also requested staff to add as many as 16 temporary taxi zones to the city’s busy downtown area. Santa Monica has only eight designated taxi zones and more than 250 taxi licenses.

Cabdrivers have long complained about the shortage of spaces where cabs can stop and wait for passengers. During a council meeting last year, more than a dozen cab operators angry over police ticketing of cabbies for occupying metered spaces drove their taxis around City Hall honking their horns for about 30 minutes.
