Farmland Project Runs Against Grain

Share

* The city of Ventura is evaluating a proposal by Beazer Homes of Sylmar to develop 42 acres of virgin farmland located on the southwest corner of Kimball and Telegraph roads. Ventura residents have recently indicated their disapproval of this type of development by passing Measure I to preserve existing agricultural land. Unfortunately, this orchard was excluded from the measure, and Beazer Homes and city officials appear intent on clear-cutting the orchard for development.

In recent elections, Ventura residents have supported pro-business City Council members and expressed a desire to generate local jobs, support local businesses and stimulate the economy. This desire to support local business should not be confused with a desire to build on our remaining farmland.

Construction of housing tracts does not keep resources within the community or stimulate the local economy. The developer is not local and few local businesses, tradesmen or residents will benefit from the construction.

Our city officials should strongly consider what is best for the residents of Ventura before allowing another lemon orchard to be turned into an unwanted housing tract. Abundant surplus housing of the type proposed currently exists in east Ventura and once a piece of farmland is developed, that land is lost forever.
