Terrorism or failure of the engines and other components apparently have been ruled out in the deadly crash of an American Airlines plane in Colombia in December.

No conclusions have been reached as to what did cause the accident, however, and several areas are still being investigated, according to a report, a summary of which was made available in Washington on Thursday. The crash of the Boeing 757 as it neared Cali on Dec. 20 killed 160 people.

“The aircraft structures and power plants groups have completed their fact-gathering and found no evidence of failures or malfunctions of the airframe, engines or their components,” the report said.

“Additionally, the investigation team has discounted any acts of terrorism or illegal interference with the flight.”

Speculation has recently focused on possible errors made by the pilots or air traffic controllers causing the plane to fly into a mountain.
