Pittman’s Eloquent Voice
William Wilson’s review of “Lari Pittman: Drawings” (“The Decadent Decor of Pittman’s Drawings,” Feb. 7) reads more like a personal attack on the artist than a meaningful critique of his work.
Pittman deserves better. His work ranks with that of a handful of contemporary artists who’ve been able to keep painting alive and infuse it with new meaning. Rather than yet another tired rehash of abstraction, Pittman has taken some of modernist painting’s own neglected devices and used them to speak passionately to the temper of our time.
Pittman’s is an eloquent and poignant voice that commands our attention and respect. Even Wilson’s unseemly derision and contempt cannot dim the joyful glow that radiates from within.
