Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Hundreds Protest Plan for Sugar Tariff
Hundreds of people gathered outside a country club near Miami to protest a proposed penny-per-pound tax for sugar. The Clinton administration is expected to endorse the tariff this week. The tax would help fund an initiative to restore the Everglades. Vice President Al Gore is expected to announce the initiative today. It calls for more than $500 million to buy farmland and restore a natural flow of water to the Everglades. “We’re already paying more than our fair share,” said Ardis Hammock, 39. The sugar cane farmer was among those gathered outside the club, where Democratic officials were meeting.
