The Place to Misplace

The Japanese capital may well be the best place in the world to lose your wallet.

According to statistics released Monday, Tokyoites went to police last year with about $26 million they had found.

One 19-year-old man found the equivalent of $190,000 wrapped in newspaper in a toilet stall and turned it over to police. No one claimed the money, so he got it back six months later. Someone else turned in a handbag with about $95,000 inside. The owner recovered that one.

The good Samaritans’ honesty must be accompanied by great patience: Police generally spend half an hour or more filling out detailed reports on found items.
