Funeral Today for Man Police Shot

Share

A memorial service for a Hong Il Kim, who was shot to death last week after a high-speed police chase, will be held today at Rose Hills Mortuary in Whittier, relatives said.

On Wednesday, Kim, 27, led officers on a 30-minute chase at speeds up to 100 mph that ended in an Orange parking lot. Police said the chase began after officers saw Kim driving recklessly through Westminster.

When officers finally cornered him, Kim tried to run over at least two officers, authorities said. They and other officers fired at the car, killing Kim.

Kim previously had been convicted of various thefts and assaults.

Several Korean American community groups decried the shooting as unwarranted because Kim did not have a gun. But police contend that a moving vehicle can be a deadly weapon. The incident remains under investigation.

Kim’s family said today’s funeral service will be at 9 a.m. at the mortuary’s Hillside Chapel at the Gate 17 entrance. A procession to the Kims’ Buena Park home will follow the morning service and then loop back to Rose Hills for the burial service.
