San Gabriel Valley : STRIKE THREATENED

Upland-based Foothill Transit bus drivers may go on strike pending the outcome of an emergency meeting with management called for 4 p.m. today, said Lou Ippolito, business manager for Local 848 of the Teamsters union.

The 150 drivers, who cover routes throughout the eastern San Gabriel Valley and into Los Angeles, voted 85-19 on Sunday in favor of striking because their recently renewed contracts lack health benefits, hospitalization plans or a competitive pay increase, said bus driver Eric Tate.

But the union’s proposal “was quite high,” said Loraine Baranello, human resources director for Laidlaw Transit, which contracts Foothill buses. The contract was renewed in January.
