Youth : News for the 18-and-under crowd : Teen’s Honesty Earns Him School Citation

David Sun is Troy High School’s first Student of the Month for Honesty.

The school, which chooses Students of the Month for excellence in each of its academic areas, is now adding a citation for youth who demonstrate honesty, perseverance, respect, responsibility, compassion, empathy and civic duty in an effort to get students to display “good behavior,” Troy Principal Robert L. Schoner said.

Faculty members nominate students who show those moral qualities, Schoner said.

In Sun’s case, a teacher nominated him because he returned a dance ticket given to him by accident.

Schoner said Sun, 17, purchased a ticket for the school’s winter formal dance but was given two. When Sun realized he had an extra ticket, he returned it.

“That’s the kind of behavior we want to applaud,” Schoner said. The awards are “a way of reinforcing positive student behavior.”

The idea for the awards came from a resolution approved by the Fullerton Joint Union High School District in 1994.

The resolution endorses the teaching of values including civic duty, compassion, honesty and responsibility in the curriculum of the district’s schools.
