Agoura Hills : Fund-Raising for Gym Center to Be Discussed

A community group working to raise funds for a regional gymnasium and community center for Agoura Hills and Calabasas will meet Tuesday to discuss fund-raising strategies, including hiring a private firm to help, said Greg Johnson, Calabasas’ community services director.

The group, Friends of the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center, hopes to raise $1.5 million, which Johnson said would be used to provide finishing touches such as weight and locker rooms, athletic equipment, office furniture and computers, and a public address system.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Agoura Hills City Hall, 30101 Agoura Court.

When completed, the facility would be open to people from throughout the region on a fee basis, officials said. The center would be built on a 3.7-acre plot near the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station. The site could accommodate a 26,000-square-foot building, which would cost about $3 million to build, officials say.

The cities began working on the project in July 1993. Officials say they hope to complete the facility sometime in 1997.

The cities are seeking firms to assist in design and construction of the facility, Johnson said. A design committee plans to gather at 7 p.m. Monday at Calabasas City Hall, 26135 Mureau Road.
