Buchanan’s Primary Win

Share

Re “Buchanan Edges Dole in N.H., Reshaping Republican Race,” Feb. 21:

The establishment doesn’t understand why Pat Buchanan is breaking out of the pack. Very simple. He is telling them the truth: the truth about jobs, the economy, the not-so-free NAFTA trade scams, transnational companies, illegal immigrants, the United Nations, Mexico City-Wall Street bailout, the many things affecting Main Street Americans and the future of our country.

The establishment can be expected to counterattack. Listen to the lies; return to Depression of the ‘30s, another world war, etc. Buchanan has captured the United We Stand America agenda and added a few items of his own.

* In New Hampshire, 27% of the Republicans voted for Buchanan. That means 73% voted against him! That’s winning?

* We have all been struck by the milling and flailing of the Republican politicians in Iowa and New Hampshire. It’s even more striking that none of them seems to be running for the office of the president of the United States.

Steve Forbes apparently thought he was running for president of the National Prep School Alumni Assn. Unfortunately for his campaign, he has only recently discovered that the plebeians are allowed to vote.

Lamar Alexander seems to be running for secretary of the National Commission to Reform Election Laws. (If only there were such a commission--they might let him wear flannel shirts to work.)

Bob Dole, having learned nothing from George Bush’s ’92 campaign, seems to be vying for appointment to the position of president of the Monotone Past--based on a leather-bound resume. (If only we were facing the problems of the ‘50s.)

Buchanan has received surprising support in his run for fuhrer--there seem to be a lot of “us” in some of the small states and not very many of “them.” (If only there were something redeeming about all this.)

* Robert Scheer (Column Left, Feb. 20) almost gets it but hates to admit it. Those of us who support Buchanan are looking for someone to state our concerns--i.e., lost jobs, potential layoffs, corporate welfare, corporate greed, abortion used as birth control, illegal immigration, schools that don’t teach, crazy court decisions, Japan’s unfair trade policies, a president whose core beliefs are found in the latest polls, a first lady we don’t like and don’t trust, just to name a few. Buchanan has reached us.

We are not “ugly creatures” as Scheer concludes after researching three decades of Buchanan’s columns. Maybe, if anyone took the trouble of reviewing Scheer’s writings for the past 30 years, there might be a few sentences Scheer would like to “clarify.”

We are here to stay, Mr. Scheer, until Buchanan or somebody else responds to our concerns.

* I am a white, male physician who will turn 50 this year. I didn’t vote for Bill Clinton four years ago, and I believe that events have proven that to be a proper choice. I like a lot of the things I hear from the Republicans, and endorse much of the “contract with America.”

I have believed that the Republicans could nominate Howdy Doody for President and defeat Clinton, and I have said (jokingly, I think) that I would vote for Saddam Hussein before I would vote for Clinton, but if Patrick (“Don’t Call Me Adolf”) Buchanan is the Republican nominee for president, I will vote for Clinton.

The absolute lunacy of this situation is astounding.
