City Council Joins Opponents of Airport Measure S
The city has joined a growing chorus of municipal organizations opposed to Measure S, a controversial initiative on the March 26 ballot that would stop the proposed development of a commercial airport at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.
“We feel this is important for the future economic development of Orange County,” Mayor Charles V. Smith said.
The City Council recently passed a resolution against Measure S and in support of the airport proposal.
Measure S would repeal Measure A, which was narrowly approved by voters in 1994. Measure A calls for a commercial airport to be built on 2,000 of the 4,700 acres of the El Toro base when it closes in 1999.
Councilwoman Margie L. Rice cast the lone vote against Westminster’s resolution, saying she supports those who oppose the airport.
