Council Takes Stand Against Measure S

Saying they want to preserve a high quality of life for residents, City Council members took a stand this week against Measure S, a March ballot initiative against development of a commercial airport at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.

Mayor Joe Erickson said that if no airport is built to serve the southern part of Orange County, the growing population in that area will mean more passengers at John Wayne Airport, which in turn will increase traffic in Costa Mesa.

Measure S seeks to repeal Measure A, which was narrowly approved by voters in 1994. Measure A calls for a commercial airport to be built on 2,000 of the 4,700 acres of the El Toro base when it closes in 1999.
